People suffer the trap of continually moving the goal post on money goals.
*We spend days trying to “get through” tasks -> mentally living in the future.
Time only became a “thing” once clocks were invented.
Thing adjusted human mindsets to “using” time.
We but a qualitative value on “good” and “bad” use of time.
We are raised to prioritize future benefits.
This life is it, with its flaws, brevity and lack of malleability.
Must make choices of what you want and let of things that you won’t be able to make time for.
Most things worth doing (relationships, business) require coordinating time with others.
Must work with this conflict vs desire to control your schedule.
Parkinson’s Law: Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
“Getting through your email” actually generates more email.
Enjoy the experiences you are having as opposed to trying to have all experiences.
Face the fact that life is finite. This will lend to an authentic relationship with life.
The right time management technique helps you neglect the right things.
Pay yourself first when it comes to time.
Limit your work in progress -> maximum of 3 projects at a time.
Resist the allure of middling projects.
2nd tier priorities are the biggest risk to your main priorities! Avoid THESE
Loss of choice is a given by the act of making choices saying no. What a relief!
Living life to the fullest requires settling, so you can focus.
Focusing on something you deem important forces you to face your limits. In the future, before started, the project is idealized.
Worry is the loop of trying to find certainty about the future (impossible).
Questions to ask yourself:
Where in your life are you pursuing comfort, when you set back pursuing discomfort.
You want to grow as a person
Are you judging yourself by standards of productivity that are impossible to meet?
In what ways have you yet to accept the fact that you are who you are, not the person you think you ought to be? Follow your talents.
In which areas of your life are you still holding back until you feel like you know what you are doing? -> everyone is winging it!
How would you spend you days differently if you didn’t care so much about seeing your actions reach fruition?
Many things can’t be done in one lifetime.
Work is seen as the “real” point of existence, so leisure became recovery.
Hiking is a nice example of leisure without a purpose.
Enjoy a hobby.
Reading operates on its own schedule.
Speed/productivity addiction is like alcoholism but celebrated.
Patience is a form of power -> it is a skill to be developed.
Develop a taste for having problems -> problems are normal.
Embrace radical incrementalism -> little daily progress, but good and long term progress.
Stopping each day strengthens the muscle of patience.
Originality lies on the far side of unoriginality.
Example must be married for a longtime to develop profound mutual understanding.
The universe doesn’t care how we spend our time - phew!
Everyone is winging it! Do what you want to do.
